The Door Scene Project

In our digital storytelling class this week we were asked to work in a small group to create the “door scene.” The parameters were simple and clear, making it much easier to complete the project as we knew exactly what was expected. When I met with my group we were all a little apprehensive about getting started. We weren’t used to shooting video with the iPad and we certainly weren’t sure that we could complete a short video without any editing which was one of the requirements. It was easier than I had expected to come up with a cohesive idea on the storyline. Our group quickly decided on roles of actor, sound effect creator, and videographer and got right to work.

As we expected, the lack of video editing was the most difficult part. We had to reshoot several clips because of inability to delete mistakes such as unwanted background noise or me breaking into laughter as I tried to keep a scared face while “acting.” Video editing aside, my group was able to complete the project with surprising speed and ease and we were proud of our short clip! Of course there are some things that could have made it better. Transitions and music could have set the tone of the video, allowing it to be a little creepier and create more tension. Although the iPad worked for this project, we were disappointed that it lacked the ability to zoom in, causing our videographer to have to walk in to create an artificial zoom. Another device may have been a better option for filming. Overall, I was surprised at how much fun I had creating this short video!

  1. Editing on an iPad was a similar challenge that my group faced. Given the parameters of the assignment, I didn't think it was a major component, but it certainly shows the difference in quality. We all want to make our work stand as a positive representation of us. Your group did a nice job, Lindy.
